In January 2018, Common and UCLA’s Black Alumni Association joined forces to organize and host a special social justice event featuring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Common, Angela Rye, Dr. Kelly Lyte-Hernandez, Dr. Tyrone Howard and more. The event’s conversations explored issues like mass incarceration and police brutality, the role of pop culture figures in politics, the Million Dollar Hoods project and current popular movements in society.

Building on the success of the last Conversation, UCLA’s Black Alumni Association will host an Action Summit event featuring panels, live musical performances, a pop up art gallery, social impact activations and more on January 12, 2019. Artists, thought leaders, industry insiders, activists, students and more will join together for the special signature event centered at the intersection of art, community and activism.

Featuring award winning artist, Common, legendary activist and scholar Angela Davis, Hip Hop Architect KRS ONE, Former Ohio State Senator and President of Our Revolution-Nina Turner, Watts Prophet-Father Amde Hamilton, reknown music producer-Lou Buster Brown, LADA Head Deputy of Mental Health Division-Gilbert Wright, Bunche Center for Social Justice Public Policy Advisor-Isaac Bryan, Executive Director for LA Sherriffs Civilian Oversight Commission-Brian Williams, Dr. Darryl Rowe-Former National Chair of the Association of Black Psychologists, Dr. Gina Fountaine, Priscilla Ocen- Loyola Law Professor and a growing list of educators and VIPs including a special Gallery of work by famed artist, Chaz Guest.

10:15 a.m. -11:15 a.m: Mental Health Matters
11:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m:   Hip Hop & Public Policy
1:15 p.m.- 2:15 p.m:     The Movement Matters
4:00 p.m.- 5:30 p.m:   2nd Annual Conversation with Common & Angela Davis co-hosted with Imagine Justice

Winston Doby Legacy Scholarship Fund VIP Reception immediately following the Conversation.  VIP ensures priority reserved seating for all panels including the Conversation with Common and Angela and admission to the VIP reception immediately following the Conversation. Includes Book signing and photo opportunities, hosted Bar and food!
